Bledisloe Cup action 2007

RUGBY UNION

The MCG has hosted three Bledisloe Cup rugby union matches in its history, with an average attendance of a healthy 81,529.

In 1997, a total of 90,119 people saw New Zealand win 33-18. One year later, another 75,127 attended Australia’s 24-16 victory.

On June 30, 2007 a crowd of 79,322 saw Australia win 20-15 after three years’ domination by the All Blacks, generally ranked as the best team in the world.

RUGBY LEAGUE

Rugby league was first played at the MCG in 1914, with a New South Wales team playing England.

The Melbourne Storm played at the MCG twice in 2000, winning both times. One of those wins was a 70-10 humiliation of the St George Illawarra Dragons in the rematch of the infamous 1999 decider.

The first rugby league State of Origin match at the MCG was played on June 8, 1994, attracting a then record league crowd in Australia of 87,161.
