Largest scoreboards at an Australian stadium unveiled at MCG

Dec 16, 2013

Two new, state-of-the-art scoreboards were unveiled at the Melbourne Cricket Ground today, further enhancing its reputation as a world-class sports and entertainment venue.

The largest scoreboards to feature at an Australian sports stadium to date, the LED high-definition scoreboards are each 25.24 metres wide and 13.17 metres high or approximately 332 square metres.

The digital area available on the new boards is more than three times the size of the boards they replace, enabling larger fonts and more information to be easily read from a distance.

Patrons will notice immediate improvement when they experience the new boards on Friday at the T20 Big Bash League (BBL) match between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades at the MCG.

“We are thrilled to have the scoreboards installed in time for our first BBL match this Friday and the upcoming Boxing Day Test,” Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) CEO Stephen Gough said.

“Although the original schedule aimed for one board to be installed this year and the other before next year’s Test, this was brought forward to maximise the viewing experience of our members and cricket patrons at the Ashes Test.

“A key feature of the new boards is their ability to show the full cricket scorecard for the first time, enabling spectators to see batting and bowling cards on the one screen.

“We thank Daktronics for providing the scoreboards, which will significantly enrich the experience of watching sport at the MCG,” Mr Gough said.

Work commenced to prepare the stadium for the new boards after the 2013 AFL Grand Final, following more than two years gathering information and visiting some of the world’s best and newest stadia.

The new 332 square metre scoreboards are by far the largest in the country:

• Sydney Cricket Ground – approximately 275 square metres
• ANZ Stadium, Sydney – approximately 230 square metres
• Metricon Stadium, Gold Coast – approximately 190 square metres
• Adelaide Oval – approximately 175 square metres
• NIB Stadium, Perth – approximately 110 square metres
• Etihad Stadium, Melbourne – approximately 90 square metres (currently being installed)

The new LED high-definition scoreboards replace two electronic video scoreboards, on Level 4 at either end of the northern stand.
