MCG chef is Asia-Pacific chocolate master

Deniz Karaca, MCG Chef de Cuisine Pastry, has been awarded the Australian National Selection at the World Chocolate Masters. Hot on the heels of his Australian national win in 2012, EPICURE’s MCG Culinary Centre Pastry Chef Deniz Karaca has been crowned the winner of the 2012/13 World Chocolate Masters Asia-Pacific region selection held recently in Taiwan.

Organised by the leading Gourmet brands Callebaut®, Cacao Barry® and Carma®, the event is dedicated to the creative use of chocolate and ‘The Architecture of Taste’.

Each of the contestants had to create one chocolate showpiece, one moulded praline, one dessert and one pastry all within seven hours, while keeping their work area absolutely spotless.

Using ‘Umami’ (a savoury taste which is one of the five basic tastes together with sweet, sour, bitter and salty) as inspiration, EPICURE’S Deniz Karaca spent months working on all of the elements that he would present during the competition. 

At the end of the gruelling and exciting challenge, the panel of leading industry judges concurred that Deniz would be awarded the accolade of ‘Asia-Pacific’s Chocolate Master’.

Deniz will now go on to represent the region at the World Chocolate Masters finals in Paris later this year.

“I’m absolutely thrilled that the months of long hours put into my creations have paid off,” enthuses Karaca.

“I have dreamt about this since I was a teenager and couldn’t have done it without the continued support of EPICURE.”

Deniz Karaca is Pastry Chef at EPICURE’S MCG Culinary Centre in Melbourne. Having won two previous Callebaut competitions in 2011 and the Australian title in 2012, Deniz is thrilled to now represent Australia and the Asia-Pacific region at the World Chocolate Masters final in Paris.

The World Chocolate Masters is the premium international competition solely dedicated to the Art of chocolate. The contest is open to the most talented chocolate professionals of the world.
