The MCG in AFL Grand Final modeThe MCG will host 45 matches in the 2014 AFL home and away season, commencing with Richmond v Carlton on Thursday March 27.

Of the 45 MCG matches, 18 will be played during the day, 10 at twilight and 15 at night, with dates and times for the final round of matches (Round 23) to be determined later in the season.

Last season's premiers and MCG tenant club, Hawthorn, will play 11 matches at the MCG in 2014 (up from nine in 2013), while fellow MCG tenant Richmond will play one fewer match at the 'G (12, down from 13 in 2013).

Several established marquee matches have been retained, including Collingwood playing Essendon on Anzac Day, and Melbourne taking on the Magpies on Queen's Birthday Monday.

The AFL is also trialling Sunday night matches, with two MCG blockbusters (Essendon v Carlton on April 6 and Collingwood v Carlton on June 29) starting at 7.10pm.

In a quirk of the calendar, the Easter long weekend will occur the week before ANZAC Day, leading to a crammed schedule of six matches at the MCG in just nine days between April 19 and 27.
