MCG Rite of Passage on Saturday

Jul 10, 2010

Action from the 2008 MCG Rite of Passage eventMore than 1000 Victorians will have the opportunity to take a screamer on the hallowed MCG turf at the sixth annual MCG Rite of Passage event to be held on Saturday July 10, prior to the AFL clash between Geelong Cats and Hawthorn.

This much loved and eagerly anticipated event provides children with the opportunity to experience what coming to the football was like when mum and dad were kids. Registrations opened last month, with the 550 available places being filled via a computer-generated ballot.

Adding to the fun and excitement of the day will be AFL stars Steve Johnson (Geelong Cats), Jarrad Waite (Carlton), Brock McLean (Carlton), Jack Grimes (Melbourne), James McDonald (Melbourne) and Dustin Fletcher (Essendon).

AFL mascots “Hawka” and “Half Cat” will also be on hand to perform their entertaining antics.

“Since its inception in 2005, more that 3000 children have enjoyed a kick on the ground with their parents,” said Lisa Trainor, Melbourne Cricket Club general manager commercial operations.

“They are able to play on the hallowed turf, following in the footsteps of players they admire and by the looks on the faces of the mums and dads, the kids aren’t the only ones having a ball.”

MCG Rite of Passage“Add to that the opportunity to meet players, take home a fantastic show bag and football and sit with your family in a reserved area to watch the match, it really is a fantastic day out for families.”

To commemorate this special family day, participants will have the opportunity to take part in a group photograph on the MCG arena, which will be published in next Thursday’s Herald Sun.

All MCG Rite of Passage participants receive:

- A free child-sized Coca-Cola branded football.
- Free children’s general admission entry into the MCG with the purchase of an adult ticket*.
- The opportunity to have a kick-to-kick on the ground prior to the game.
- A fantastic MCG showbag.
- Access to a reserved seating area to watch Geelong Cats v Hawthorn.
- The chance to meet AFL players and team mascots.

(*child must be under 15 years of age at July 10, 2010)
