In 1968 two squash courts were opened in the Western Stand (later named the Ponsford Stand) and the Squash Section was officially established within the year.
In 1972/73 the Section won the Metropolitan A Grade premiership, a feat it repeated in the Spring competition of 1974. The section secured the A Grade premiership in 1989 and the A1 Grade premiership in Autumn 1998 and 2001.
Redevelopment work rendered the Section “homeless” during much of the 2002-2005 period, when the facilities of various clubs were utilised prior to the Section sharing amenities in the RACV Club’s new Bourke Street headquarters from late-2005.
Milestones
1968 – Squash courts and Section established at the MCG in new Western Stand.
1972/73 – MCC wins its first Metropolitan A Grade premiership.
2001 – A1 Autumn premiers, with similar success following in the Spring competition of 2002 and 2005.
2002 – Ponsford Stand decommissioned for redevelopment and Section uses other clubs’ facilities for three years.
2005 – MCC accepts RACV Club’s offer to share courts at their city headquarters.
Courts
The MCC Squash Section has a home facility in the RACV Building at 501, Bourke Street, Melbourne.
Competitions
MCC Squash Section fields 13 teams in the Club Circuit competition, from 'A1' grade to 'F' grade, and one Masters grade 1 team. Thus, there are teams available for players of all levels of ability.
Championships
The MCC Squash Section conducts two annual championships:
MCC Squash Section Championships
These championships are open to all financial members of the Squash Section and are played in January each year as a lead-up to the Autumn pennant season. The names of the Open winners are recorded on an Honour Board in the Squash Bar.
MCC Members Championships
These championships are open to all MCC members. It is not necessary to be a member of the Squash Section. These championships are played in July as a leadup to the Spring pennant season. Winners of the Open Championship are recorded on a silver salver which was generously donated by the MCC Committee.
