The MCG will host 45 matches in the 2018 AFL home and away season, commencing with Richmond v Carlton on Thursday March 22 as part of a triple header in the opening round.
Notable elements of the schedule include:- Five rounds of tripleheaders (rounds 1, 3, 5, 8 and 20).
- Five Friday night matches at the MCG (up from three in 2017).
- Round 23 remains a “floating fixture”, with dates and times to be confirmed in season.
- Gary Ablett's first match for Geelong will be at the MCG against Melbourne in Round 1.
- All 18 clubs will play at least one home and away match at the MCG.
MCG tenant club and 2017 AFL premiers, Richmond, will play three more games at the 'G in 2018 (14 in total), while Geelong Cats will play seven MCG matches, up from five last season.
Several established marquee matches have been retained, including Collingwood playing Essendon on Anzac Day, Geelong Cats v Hawthorn on Easter Monday, Dreamtime at the 'G (June 2) and Melbourne taking on the Magpies on Queen's Birthday Monday, June 11.
