MCG Media Statement: 2020 AFL Premiership Season

Friday, March 13, 2020

The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), as ground managers of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), is supportive of the actions taken by its partner, the AFL, in relation to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The AFL has announced that the 2020 AFL Premiership Season will proceed as scheduled, however fans will not be able to attend the MCG for the foreseeable future.

All fans who purchased public tickets to matches in Round 1 of the AFL Premiership Season are eligible for a full refund and will be contacted directly, via email, by Ticketek.

In collaboration with the AFL, we will continue to provide updates on future arrangements when available.

In the meantime, we take the advice of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to continue with an increased focus on hygiene measures and should any flu-like symptoms emerge to consult with a medical professional.

The Victorian Department of Health and Human Services has a hotline for public information on COVID-19 which is 1800 675 398 and further information is also available at https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus

The following quotes can be attributed to Melbourne Cricket Club CEO Stuart Fox:

“The MCC has been working for a number of weeks to prepare for a range of scenarios should the global COVID-19 pandemic continue to escalate.

The welfare of our staff, our members, AFL fans and all visitors to the MCG has always been and will continue to be of the utmost importance to us, and all of our plans are made with these groups front of mind.

Whilst this is a challenging situation for all, we are confident in our ability to work collaboratively with the AFL and our partners to navigate through these unusual and uncertain times.”
