What is Diwali?
Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Celebrated by millions of people worldwide, including many here in Melbourne, the festival holds deep significance for Hindu, Sikh, Jain and some Buddhist communities.
The festival runs for five days and follows a lunisolar calendar, meaning the dates change each year. In 2026, Diwali falls on Sunday November 8, with the five-day festival running from Friday November 6 to Tuesday November 10.
