2015 Melbourne Cup on display at the Australian Sports Museum

The 2015 Melbourne Cup won by Prince of Penzance and Michelle Payne OAM is now on display at the Australian Sports Museum at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, returning to the collection amid this year’s Spring Racing Carnival.
The Cup commemorates the day Payne became the first woman to ride a winner in the prestigious race, steering outsider Prince of Penzance to victory in the 155th running at Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday November 3, 2015.
Payne visited the MCG on Thursday and spoke about the Cup returning to the museum.
“It’s the race that stops the nation, so to have the cup there, which is so grand, is a really special touch to the museum.
“For young children to see [the Cup] and be able to aspire to it, especially young girls, is a great reminder of what can be achieved if you believe in yourself and work hard.
“It’s just so iconic. I can’t wait to go and visit it myself.”
Melbourne Cricket Club CEO Stuart Fox said the Cup is a fitting addition to the collection.
“Michelle Payne made racing history, and her win continues to inspire people far beyond the sport.
“This is exactly the type of story we want to celebrate at the Australian Sports Museum. It’s a privilege to have Michelle’s Cup on display and to honour her remarkable victory.”
The Cup returns to the collection on loan. Co-owner Sandy McGregor said:
“The owners are very thankful to the MCC for keeping the Cup on display at the museum. I am sure many visitors and members will find it a fitting tribute to a once in a lifetime moment.”
