ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Final – the records

Friday, April 03, 2020

The 2020 ICC Women’s World Cup Final, held at the MCG on Sunday March 8, has cemented itself in the record books, smashing a number of Australian and worldwide attendance records.

The Final, which saw Australia defeat India in an 85-run victory, concluding with a post-match concert from international pop star Katy Perry, was attended by 86,174 people, setting a benchmark for both national and international cricket.

This attendance figure broke a number of national and international sporting records, including:

  • Highest attended women’s sporting fixture in Australia,
  • Second highest attended women’s sporting fixture worldwide,
  • Highest attended women’s cricket match worldwide,
  • Highest attended T20 cricket match, men’s or women’s, worldwide.

Melbourne Cricket Club CEO Stuart Fox said the Club is extremely proud to host such milestones at the MCG and commends the work of the ICC and the Local Organising Committee for their success.

“Women’s sport is really on the rise and this is another amazing milestone. With the new Australian record for a female sporting match here at the MCG, surpassing the one set at last year’s AFLW Grand Final, shows that there is a strong demand for female sport to be displayed on a big stage like this,” Mr Fox said.

Along with attendance records, the Final also broke Australian records for TV viewership, with a total of 1.2 million viewers watching their home team claim back-to-back World Cup triumphs, the highest ever for a women’s cricket event in Australia. Foxtel also ranked the match as their sixth most-watched cricket match of all time – men’s or women’s.
